PTCL EVDO Mon 20/04/2009 02:36

I recently had the opportunity to try out the evdo broadband service. I was not expecting wonders and hence am not disappointed. Also as it was just a free trial I did not pay anything. Anyways I used it side by side with wateen and the verdict is crawling slow. Your mileage may vary but this being center of the capital and all other services fly here.

Wow! These companies are launching these slick devices yet the coverage remains limited and in big metropolises only!! What about the customers in smaller cities and rural areas where connectivity is lacking? Even in a city like Chakwal, this doesn’t work and people are still using dial-up. I myself use WOL dial-up with wol as username and password and 13131313 as dial in number. It is a technology that has yet to fail me!

I am using this device since last 3 months and service awesome… very like a charm for me. Its speed varies places to places as per its signals strength as well as as per number of users per BTS.

I have tried it at three places in khi so far (Korangi Creek just beside sea shore, Gulshan e Iqbal and P.E.C.H.S) and results were SUPERB … but at Kala board near Nipa at my friend place that has FLATS in all four direction so the signal was just one n speed was just dial up but its due to poor signal coverage in flats as in flats signal find difficult to penetrate i think :P

    Thanks

    Dear Shehrooz,

Although there is a slot for a RUIM (cdma variant of SIM), however, PTCL is still programming the thing hardwire, if you have a kind of device that PTCL can not re-program, then you won’t be able to use it here.

Well I am quite happy with Wateen, PTCL have only launched EvDO USB and not a LAN device, but you can still use it on multiple computers as under:

case 1: if one of your machines is always on:
simply setup a home network or ICS (internet connection sharing) under windows, google has a lot on this, for Linux all you need is setup IPtables.

case 2: no computer is always on, or you want to save power:
if you do not have a WIFI router with a USB port get one, you can find ASUS WL-520GU anywhere in Pakistan (Rs. 3450/- in Rawalpindi). Install Tomato ND USB mod refer to:

    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22812809-How-to-Install-Asterisk-on-an-Asus-WL520GU-router

Also install packages for WVDial, then use # wvdialconf to configure and # wvdial to dial / connect, you need to use a bit of Linux to set this connection as your WAN then you can use any WIFI or upto four Wired LAN connections to use any kind of Internet.
